3 officers dead, one critically wounded, Suspect also dead.

I don't have any idea of how Oakland communities, groups, or neighborhoods are going to respond to this, but do have a sense that this will notably affect things.

I had heard that 4 officers had been shot, just before leaving work, but didn't get the details till midway through a late dinner with friends (ah,the ubiquitous iphone phenomena). Onthe subject of Oakland crime[livejournal.com profile] rissymonster told me that three people had been shot (non-fatally) in a hold up two blocks away the other night. Apparently an armed robber came into the grocery store in the basement of the Jackson Lake building and one of the customers started fighting back. The robber fired, hitting the employee and two of the customers, but not injuring them such that they couldn't subdue him, beat him up with a barbell, and then handcuff him till police arrived. (In Oakland armed robberies and homicides aren't particularly newsworthy, so I can find nothing about this in the papers).

On its own, the second event makes me wonder if this is just an incident of the robber having a bad day or a sign that people have finally hit the "had enough" point and we are going to see more incidents of both violent self-defense and vigilantism. But I feel it has more weight in the context of having had four cops seriously injured and killed by a poster child for brutal crime problems in Oakland is worrisome.
