This article on foreclosed homes causing blight had me researching California's adverse possession laws.
While I don't think I could manage the five years required for ownership... it does have me wondering how feasible squatting actually could be. Just as an abstract. I am pretty sure that the hassle of getting booted after a few months wouldn't be worth the effort of trying.
On the other hand, I pay relatively low rent for the area, but given my current insufficiently employed status, even that is a stretch. Getting a cheaper/free stay from the title holder by maintaining the place might be something worth looking into, even if chasing a pipedream.
