Although this information comes from the CIA World Factbook (so, theoretically an official and reputable source), I am very surprised and a bit dubious of the numbers. This doesn't mean that the information is inaccurate, it could be more of a reflection on what the media I read says about the outside world.
Unsurprising:
Poor African countries have a very high mortality rate.
Afghanistan has over double the mortality rate of the United States.
Much more surprising to me:
Iraq has a lower mortality rate than the US.
The West Bank and the Gaza Strip both have a lower mortality rate than Israel, which in turn has a lower rate than the US.
Japan and the United Kingdom have a higher mortality rate than the US.
