I am still mulling this, but a few things stood out so I figured I'd share.

80% of the US population is white, but about half the homicide victims were black.
53% of those arrested for homicide were black
"While Mr. Carter of the F.B.I. declined to discuss crime trends and the reasons for them, he speculated that better medical care in recent years has spared some assault victims from being listed eventually as homicide victims."
